Harvest festival in Salzburger Land

How we celebrate the harvest time in Salzburg

Salzburger Land is very rich in its traditions and customs. One especially popular event is the annual "Bauernherbst", or Harvest Festival. Each year around the harvest time, you can look forward to events, music, dancing, eating and having a wonderful time. Markets with traditional crafts and local homemade specialities are a treat for your eyes and tastebuds. Traditions such as folk dancing, church services on the mountain and the regional sport "Ranggeln" keep our customs alive. You can also celebrate the Harvest Festival in Zell am See-Kaprun!

Here's what to look forward to during the Harvest Festival in Zell am See-Kaprun

  • Harvest Festival proprietors: Marked with the "Bauernherbst" (Harvest Festival) logo, these establishments prepare delicious dishes using local and seasonal ingredients.
  • Handiwork presentations: Schnapps distillers, bread bakers, cheesemakers, carpenters and tailors present their crafts – you can even lend a hand now and then.
  • Cultural events: Traditional and brass band performances, cabarets, dance evenings, a jazz brunch and many more events create an exciting side programme.

The Harvest Festival opening in Salzburger Land

This annual event gets off to a festive start! Each year the Harvest Festival is celebrated under a different motto and hosts a celebratory grand opening. The festival starts with an opening address and procession, and features a festival tent with music, dancing and food. It is then that the harvest festival markets and events begin all over the entire state of Salzburg.

Harvest Festival on the mountain

The Harvest Festival also finds its way into the Salzburg mountains. The rustic chalets invite you to bake, make cheese and taste various foods, and they also host various fun evening events. We personally enjoy visiting the Unteraigen chalet during the Harvest Festival:  this chalet is known for its excellent schnapps. The distiller Toni will be happy to show you how it is made, and you can even try a sip of the pure regional schnapps that is produced with local ingredients.

Kasnockn, Bratln, Krapfn and Knoflkas… are you scratching your head wondering what we're talking about? We suggest trying these delicious foods for yourself! Visit us at the Kaprunerhof during the Harvest Festival!
